Merton and Wandsworth was 5.1% swing I read. It's effectively a Labour area now after years of Conservative rule.

So many residents must have voted Labour in General Elections but Conservative locally for years. Since Labour have been in a for a while I suspect fears of losing their low council tax have drifted away.

The Liberal Democrats now have 520 councillors, and the Conservatives have 508. It is now clear to us with just the one council to go that the Liberal Democrats will end up having won more council seats than the Conservatives in these local elections.

Good question. Perhaps none of the better potential candidates actually want the job, or maybe don't want to been seen as a losing candidate. I think Blair was being very clever in setting up these new posts as "mayor" of London, Manchester etc. He knew that big metropolitan areas tend to be labour dominated, so having a winner-takes-all mayor always has a very good chance of being labour. Only Johnson has beaten that so far in London.

Didn't they do the same thing in 2016 and spend most of the time going on about how he was going to come after your GOLD rather than actually presenting any sort of positive vision?

I lived in Croydon at the time (I didn't see any of the aforementioned leaflets myself, presumably it wasn't the sort of area they thought would be interested in such concerns) and I didn't vote for him because I found him uninspiring and basically untrustworthy given his flip-flopping over Heathrow.

But christ, compared to the Conservative alternative this time I'd have voted for him three times given the opportunity.

I understand the logic of why they aren't.

Labour know they're going to win the next election anyway if they stay on this course. They are trying to appeal to both the remain voting metropolitan liberals and the leave voting working classes simultaneously. Being too outspoken on policy risks alienating one or the other.

It's a sensible tactic though thoroughly uninspiring. Also it gives less options for the Tories and right wing media to weaponise against them.

As a rule of thumb, when the Tories Demand that Labour do X or Y, the best plan is always Z.
