Is European Qualification Still on The Cards For The Seagulls?

Brighton currently sit 8th in the EPL and with average form over our last five matches, chances of making European qualification are slowly ebbing away. But all is not lost! There are still nine matches left to play spread across the remainder of March, April, and May – anything can happen in the Premier League!

Let’s start by looking at the current league standings so we can get a clear picture of where the Seagulls stand. We are currently sitting in 8th place:

4. Aston Villa – 56 Points
5. Tottenham – 53 Points
6. Man United – 47 Points

As we know, the top 4 spots are guaranteed UEFA Champions League entry and as it stands, it’s looking to be Arsenal, Liverpool, and Man City for certain, with the 4th spot still being fought over by the Spurs, Villa, and Man United.

The 5th spot is reserved for the Europa League, the winner of the FA Cup also gets a spot in the Europa League, while the winner of the League Cup gets a place in the Europa Conference League. But, if the winners of the FA Cup and League Cup qualify for Europe via other means, their place go to the next-ranked teams.

As it stands, Man City won the FA Cup, while Liverpool won the League Cup. So, Man City’s Europa League spot would go to Man United with current standings, while Liverpool’s Europa Conference League spot would go to West Ham as both Man City and Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League.

Therefore, with 9 matches left to play, and trailing West Ham by only 2 points, European qualification is certainly a possibility for the Seagulls.

Remaining Schedule for The Seagulls​

So, from a technical perspective, with current points distribution, and the matches left, Brighton can potentially qualify for either the Europa League or Europa Conference League. But it all depends on the remaining matches so let’s look at our schedule:

2. Vs. Brentford – 3rd of April
3. Vs. Arsenal – 6th of April
4. Vs. Burnley – 13th of April
5. Vs. Chelsea – Postponed
6. Vs. Bournemouth – 27th April
7. Vs. Aston Villa – 4th of May
8. Vs. Newcastle – 11th of May
9. Vs. Man United – 19th of May

The matches against Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Man United will all be incredible and we don’t have an easy route by any means. However, there’s plenty of points still to be had against opponents like Chelsea, Burnley, Brentford, Bournemouth, and Newcastle.

Indeed, for any hope of qualification, we need guaranteed wins against the bottom half clubs while also trying to at least scrape draws against the top contenders.
