Yes - and you can still be offside even if the ball is passed backwards. You can be in front of the ball when it is passed backwards, and run back to kick it - and therefore offside.

Didn't we have a goal ruled out earlier this season / last season where the ball was passed backwards, and the player that picked it up had run back from an offside position?
The one where this absolutely happened was Moder's (non) goal at Bramall Lane, during lockdown.
