2 anytime returns (because off peak no longer exists) from Newcastle to London, standard class, quoted on Twitter. Guess the price (range).

Probably cheaper if you go via Saudi Arabia.

Not going to defend the absurd pricing of train tickets but it can be done a lot cheaper by going on a nominated train rather than anytime. You can't compare with flying because you can't get 'anytime' flight tickets! Also, I very much doubt you could turn up today and book a flight to Newcastle.

not what the tweet is saying, still expensive, £391 if you go after 9:30, or £495 peak hours. its also about 3x the cost to go than to return.

they might not sell "peak time", they still do peak pricing. look out for this when they announce no peak fares to great fanfare in coming years.

a) thieves
b) terrible for the environment when flying is cheaper
c) next season this could be you if our kick off time gets changed up there late

Except it's not true.

This is per person. So - £312, not £786. Still expensive mind you.

In fairness, and omitted, the extra £263 for first class does include a moldy roll and a piece of stale cheese.

But the price is for four tickets that the attention seeking Tweet has also omitted.

£156 is still a lot though. Four folk would be best getting in the car.

1) It says 2x in the thread title
2) I'd say outrageous more than expensive! Certainly more than the equivalent flight.

Memories of Marseille.
Quick look up and Paris to Marseille next Monday, returning Tuesday is £144. A distance of 480 miles one way completed in 3:20.
Of course, to get to Paris you use Eurostar, which costs £215 return.
