    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

I sometimes forget what is run of the mill here, is actually rather special in Blighty, and vice versa. Over here right now there is a massive fashion for Hydrangas, can’t stand em myself but there you go. My three acers (thank god for acidic soil) are all just about to start going...

Glad to see you are west a fair bit, in Sussex they would soon be turning pink in all probability.

Love an Albizia me. Only problem I had in Hove was something chewing into the trunk just above ground level, no idea what it was. Now have a tiny one starting here in Oz.

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

I lost both Washingtonia and Phoenix, but I do believe a Phoenix is doable, at least in Hove. I lost a small one after just a couple of cool winters, but I only lost a big one after a 10-14 day severe cold snap that had been preceded by snow AND I had neither protected the crown or got rid of...

I also lost palm trees that I had hoped would make it. One cold winter they seemed to cope with, but when it stretched to three in a row with snow (not much, just a couple of cms that hung around on grass or undisturbed ground for a day or two) then they gave up the ghost.

Tried one in my sheltered Hove garden some years back. Flowered the first year but not again, died about 3 years later, definitely cold related.

I know Jack has already qualified his post, but here is my two penneth. Because pots/planters on patios and outside pubs are 9 times out of 10 a way to bring flora to an urban spot. What I mean is somewhat self explanatory, patio will usually be concrete, pub space ditto or decking. What you...

You are right, water ain’t cheap, which is why some Aussies look at me thinking I must be crazy! But the opposite is true of electricity when you have plenty of solar power on hand. We also have tanks which catch the rainwater which is then used on all the big pots on the decked area. One day I...

The fern is growing at about an inch per year, which is why I bought a big one! I have not got irrigation set up yet in that garden, only for the pots on the deck/patio at the back of the house. I am just watering the fern nearly daily in summer, even then the fronds do get burnt on the harshest...

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

Seeing the tree fern above reminded me that I said that I would update on my garden this simmer here in Oz (I have a tree fern too, though not as big). Mine was just rough gressland up until about three years back, untouched pretty much since the house was built about 10 years before. I created...

Not sure about the garlic, but I think you have licence to blitz the whole patch with Roundup for a couple of months (having identified any feature plants first). In fact, if you can find a Napalm supplier ………..

Artificial grass has shit loads of sand on it. This does two things, firstly helps to hold it down tight to the ground, and secondly it supports the ‘blades’ of grass to remain vertical rather than being squashed flat when walked on. You actually should add to the sand occasionally. Maybe try...

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

Some months (year + ?) I professed a love of tropical gardens, and said that I was trying to create something here in Victoria (warm temperate with really hot bits). Anyway, I started from the first pic two years ago, spent a year landscaping by hand, and then spent another year choosing and...
