I posted a bit about how I built it up in post #326 - it took a bit of time, don’t expect day one on Mastodon to be immediately as busy, but by following the topics I’m interested in, I worked out who was trustworthy and built things up from there.
Edit: Also, follow the #Introduction hashtag...
No, but I suspect what you’re experiencing is the usual delays caused whenever Twitter goes down and servers get swamped with new user requests.
The link will almost certainly turn up late, or you can try a different instance which may have fewer pending requests. Ideally setting up the...
I don’t want to derail this thread, but how?
At the end of the day, data has to be stored. For example, a database the size of Twitter’s is not going to fit locally on user’s machines, so we’re not going to be effectively having Twitter’s DB “Dropbox”ed onto each user’s machine.
Even if...
Absolutely agree re: the popularity/dickheads dilemma. It’s just part of growing.
I’m a big fan of the decentralised nature of Mastodon because it means that while somebody can sulk and take their instance down, they can’t take down the whole service.
Perhaps I’m easily pleased, but I found enough to keep me interested in my preferred topics. I am a bit dull however, I appreciate mileage may vary dependent on interests.
So the way I use it is to start by following topics, rather than individuals, e.g. #Ukraine, that pops everything with a #Ukraine hashtag into my feed, from which I can then happily mute any pro-Russia trolls that aren’t adding anything to the conversation. (There’s surprisingly few) - you can...
How would web3 help poor Elon pay his bills? He’s got the money, he’s just choosing to believe he shouldn’t have to honour commitments made by previous management, despite having every opportunity to study the accounts etc prior to purchase, and going in with his eyes open.
I’m finding...
He hasn’t paid his hosting bill, latest chat suggests he’s effectively having his connections to his own database throttled by either Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud.
An enjoyable (if long) read regarding what’s left of Twitter.

Sorry, but that’s what Twitter may once have been. It is now, for better or for worse, a thin-skinned tech billionaire’s plaything. There are other, better tools available that do the same job. Twitter had a huge advantage as any “brand leader” does, but that is what Musk is spaffing up the...
It’s surprised me to an extent that he’s quite such a fool. The popular opinion for years was that Tesla was Elon, now I think a lot of people are wondering whether Tesla could have grown faster and with greater efficiency if it had been under more capable and less capricious management...
I’m sorry, I know I keep posting on this thread, but I’ve never seen such a well-established tech platform that’s been embedded in millions of peoples lives for so long crash and burn at this speed. I’m genuinely gobsmacked.

It seems Musk has progressed to banning people who have not breached any of Twitter’s rules, but simply requested his comment on a story that involved him.

Well, I feel previous ownership were probably more balanced and less contrary, but really, no allegedly public space should actually be controlled by a small number of unaccountable people.
As for the FBI side of things, I think there’s an element of naivety if anyone believes that there’s no...
I’m not so sure, a lot of the science, tech, and econ people I used to follow when I was on Twitter (some time ago) are now present on Mastodon, but the jackass to sane human ratio seems much more acceptable. One (US) guy described it as being like Canada on Mastodon, which made me chuckle...
It’s pretty crazy what’s happening here, Twitter is now like watching Anakin Skywalker move to the dark side in real-time and live-tweeting his thoughts, and the rebel alliance all getting their accounts suspended for posting unflattering responses.
I think Mastodon is going to be an...
The best short explanation of how self-verification works in Mastodon.

It basically relies on your online persona also having access to a known web presence, so links can be cross-referenced between the trusted website/blog...
Musk has begun banning accounts he doesn’t like and banning recognised, accredited journalists he disagrees with from Twitter. He’s also preventing cross-posting from Mastodon to Twitter, and the journalistic world is trying to move en-masse to Mastodon. Mastodon is absolutely suffering...
