Have you tried flushing out the wax? Unfortunately not on NHS any more but there are kits. My pal Bob the social worker was going deaf some years ago. Turns out it was wax. He's a stubborn old git and it has kicked it again. Worth a try. Apologies if my suggestion is exasperatinly naive...
