The problem we have is the Tories couldn't help use the opportunity to abuse their power, ie declare one ID type is good for the oldies but not for the young, also deliberately exclude legitimate forms of ID used by young people.
Anyway, all being well they'll be binned soon. Then Labour can...
THIS
I lot of people just don't carry photo ID around, even if you drive a lot people don't carry a licence because you don't need to.
I carry a phone with 2 cards to keep it light. Many don't even do that, just phone plus Apple pay or similar.
The problem is Voter ID is just the start. Its important to remember the Electoral Commission's independence has also been comprimised, its effectively now under government control.
Still it could be worse, Peter Bone (CON) tried to push a bill to have it abolished altogether.
If you need photo ID to vote YES. I don't want to see people disenfranchised, especially the poor
Survation did a poll, 11% of those with income <£20k had no photo ID, compared to 1% to those with incomes >£40k.
The poor don't have cars, the poor don't have passports
If the government had agreed to that it would have negated the main reason for ID in the first place, ie to stop young people from voting.
Its funny how an Oyster card is good for a 65 year old but somehow invalid for an 18 year old.
Like the Republicans in the US their base is dying...
At the post office they'd be happy with a glance at your debit card (in my experience they often don't bother). The voter ID is very specific and in some cases is invalid for certain groups....
Does seem to be what's going on.
I appreciate turnout for local elections is low, but it is troubling that only around 5% of those estimated NOT to have no voter ID have asked the authorities for a photo ID voting card.
Are we looking at a comprimised election today?
Asked by someone for Voter ID outside the polling station.
I asked them to ID themselves first, he told me her was a clerk, I then reminded them all clerks should not be stepping outside the polling station.
Clearly turning individuals away with no ID and not recording them. Not great...
Hard evidence the Tories are engaging in voter suppression. They have since withdrawn the leaflet realising they can't get away with this stuff unoticed.
Will the Electoral commission now act...
But here here is almost zero evidence of voter fraud, one proven case was it?
In France everyone has an ID card and you need it to vote, here that's not the case here. Bring in ID cards first if they really think its a problem....
You know they're not even handed, why defend them?
The fact of the matter is the Tory base is dying, their appeal is becoming more and more limited mostly to the over 60's. Like their Republican cousins in the US they are reaching the point the only way they can win in through jerrymandering...
