You might be right, and I'm only speculating here in an attempt to respond to your legitimate point:
If it is the case that many of those infected only have very mild symptoms, are asymptomatic, or the virus is particularly virile before the symptoms appear then, even with the lockdown...
We can only speculate on that front, and it won't be mono-causal, but my early contenders include:
-- unpreparedness: underfunding of NHS; complacent disregard for emergency planning
-- delayed action by the government: we were too late going into the lockdown
-- failure to take social care...
Completely agree. To add to our key workers, the other star of this has been the general public, who have embraced the lockdown, and even pushed the government towards it. I've done the shopping in our household, going to the supermarket twice a week and, in that time, I've seen just one...
Wow. I've just read through the first ten pages of this thread and, judging by the comments, you all of a sudden understand why the poll lands the way it does. Bwian, kevo, Dick Knights Mumm and Wozza were all paying attention
Well, precisely.
And, yes, Wozza, it is time for another poll. We should run them at regular intervals (with exactly the same options), so we can track if there's any changing opinion on NSC, and what the direction of travel is.
The absence of the baying pit plays well for Starmer. Even better, he can use the current calm to build up a case and then, once that's established, ram that home which will work more effectively to a larger, louder audience.
Thanks. This is helpful, although I'm not entirely sure whether you're posting it to demonstrate that the UK has: done well; badly; it's too early to say; that international comparisons are unfair (I think that one is ruled out); or something else?
That's a pretty good summary of things.
PUBLIC INQUIRY. Rapid, professionally-conducted by multiple skilled personnel, with the kind of access that Chilcot had.
It seems Johnson's comments about being willing to shake CV19 victims by the hand were delivered just after SAGE had advised against hand-shaking. I wonder how that fits in with the "guided by the science" mantra?
Yes, I did indicate the other day that the real challenge will emerge in the relaxation of the lockdown, which will require subtle, nuanced and complex messaging. All this suggests that Johnson will be looking down when giving his briefings, reading from a script. Or, at the very least, I hope...
As if it wasn't entirely predictable, Johnson is being shown to be dreadful on detail, nonchalant, and treating the inhabitants as pawns in one of the games he got taught at Eton.
I understand that you don't like the Tories. I don't either, but I can recognise that they can do some things well. Many of the things they've done in relation to CV19 have been good. As an example, they've broken from their 'ideology' of free markets, and greatly expanded the role of the state...

I can shut up about it if you want me to too, but I've just read this and thought it might be of use:
