Ok, some questions...
The aperture doesn't change - I assumed that would be a hindrance?
When you say 50mm 1.8, what does that refer to?
Apologies for my basic (if even that!) knowledge.
I was hoping someone could give me a bit of advice re lenses...
I have a Canon 550D and have been quite happy with the lens it came with. Recently though I'm beginning to feel a tad frustrated at its limited zoom, and not being able to play around with DoF as much as I'd like.
It's an 18-55...
I know it's kind of cheating, but Camera Bag for the mac is a great simple app for adjusting photos. I took some in gloom last year, accidentally keeping a tiny aperture and low iso. They'll never be perfect but the programme helped me cheer up a bit.

I've taken some liberties and added the Flickr accounts here, as contacts on mine. I have to say though that the quality on show from what I've seen is jolly high. Prepare for some relentless "How did you do THAT?" questions...
I second this. The difference in showing someone 10 of the best of the best photos form your last holiday, as opposed to getting them to look at all 100, is, not only for them, but so much more satisfying for you too.
I tried to open one recently but didn't understand how their share/albums things worked. So gave up.
I should have another go really because everytime I click on a photo I like, from someone's blog etc, the link is pretty much always to Flickr.
This is a GREAT thread; very interesting to look at the sites people have found. Being a beginner myself, this started me off on what I hoped is the right track Photography Tips | Photography Tutorials | Geofflawrence.com - quite dry which I like, and explains things 'from the ground up'...
