[Albion] Ansu Fati **Signed On Loan 01/09**

I was absolutely buzzing when we signed Fati and I remember Paul Barber teasing a massive signing coming in. I so wanted Ansu to succeed and recover his astounding early career form, but it's just not coming. He certainly isn't showing the pace or the ball skills to play on the wing and last night Gross was frantically signalling him to stay wide. But he kept drifting inside, leaving Estupinan isolated when he too hasn't recovered his pre-injury rhythm. When Ansu comes inside, he just seems to run in to blind alleys and, if anything, he seems to be losing his physique, not building up. It just leaves me thinking the Premier League is too physical for him. I've been wrong about players before and maybe he is building up to a blistering end to the season, but I'm not convinced. If Barcelona need to trim costs and don't want him back, I'd still take him next season but if we are still working on his recovery programme, the terms would need to be dramatically better, because we aren't getting much value for money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Thought he looked excellent in his first few games with us but very poor last night
I think there's something in this.

His attitude when he got here was spot on.

Post injury, he's throwing his arms up in the air and milling around the pitch not really contributing.

Shocker yesterday.
Useless defensively, no physicality and a liability in the wide position. Still time to chip in with a few goals/assists but wouldn't be looking to take him on loan again next season and prohibitive wages means any transfer for him is unlikely. Doubt Barca can afford to keep him, under contract until 2027... Ouch

I thought he started well yesterday and looked up for it from the kick off, but way before half time he had drifted out of the game and his defensive work became non-exsistant. If he had been replaced at half time, he would not really have had any grounds for complaint. This is just hugely disappointing, but somehow RDZ needs to get something out of him, or risk overplaying others, who are also struggling for form post injury or are playing too many games. There are going to be some interesting discussions (hopefully behind closed doors).

Pound for pound, think he could be up there with the worst value for money signings we have ever made.

200k a week (or is it more?) and won’t even attempt to take a full back on. Disastrous amount of money for us to spend on a player who offers so little.

like having 10 men when he plays

very very poor consistently

Whilst I agree his reluctance to take his man on is frustrating and a sign of his fragile confidence, I though he had one of his best games for us tonight. Seemed to get the bit between his teeth and showed more desire than he has previously.
Agree with you @Farehamseagull he was more effective than Adringra tonight imho, he made a couple of decent crosse and link ups

But overall, I do feel that he's probably a bit short of what the club hoped for and even Fati himself.

He put a good cross in when he first came on and had a pop shot from 30 yards in the 90th minute, what else?

Drives me insane when he’s on the pitch as a winger but constantly drifts into an overcrowded middle. Eventually RDZ put Buononatte and Adingra out wide to stop it tonight.

I genuinely cannot get my head round how this kid was meant to be one of the best in the world not long ago. He’s shown no elite level attributes.

I thought Adringa was miles more effective/dangerous when he moved to the left in the last 15 mins. Fati moved central and also looked more at home. Sadly the only sub who really did FA when he came on was Evan :(

Really unfortunate (although predictable to a degree given his record) that he got injured just as he seemed to be settling in and starting to have an impact - it essentially buggered up any chance of his loan spell turning into what we hoped it might. Sad for him and us - and interesting to see what happens to him in the summer because Barca won’t get anything like the kind of money they want and he won’t find any club prepared to match his current wages at the moment.

That’s because he’s not a winger. He’s a 10 and we have far too many of them and not enough wingers.

A front four of Adingra (or March), Fati, Mitoma, Joao Pedro would beat almost any team we encounter. But injury and failure to strengthen mean we’re constantly playing square pegs in round holes.
