I hated Withdean, it served a purpose I guess, but I really hated the stadium.

Not just you. Everybody hated Withdean. I would happily have stayed at Gillingham until the Amex was built.

Disclaimer; I lived Surrey/Kent border at the time so Gillingham was an easy drive. It was also a proper football ground though and I much preferred it to Withdean.
Fair enough if it was an easy journey for you.
I honestly think the club would have ended up non league if we had stayed at Priestfield for longer than 2 seasons.

Not everyone hated Withdean at all. I think an awful lot of people were very happy to have the Albion back in Brighton & Hove. A decade+ in Gillingham would have killed the club - no doubt about that.
